Wendall's generosity was boundless. Express an interest in a horse and he'd put you in a saddle for a trail ride. One of these horses was a buckskin which I think he'd recently bought for Marion. I may have been the first test rider as the horse gained speed back to the barn and we had a bit of a runaway. Fortunately the horse responded to my request to halt at the barn entrance rather than hit the cement floor running. These were the days before horse activities were lawyered. At another time, I was privileged to look after the horses for a few days while he and Marion attended a conference. They returned home early and I always wondered if he noticed even with this surprise return, the barn was clean and the water buckets full. Then there was the winter day when one of his boys, ignoring Poppa'
s urging to get shoes on, was playing in the barn, indifferent to manure, ice, and urine, barefoot! When they first moved into Penny Lane farm, the furnace was polluting the house with misdirected fumes. That was a scary time. Wendall's face was a witness to his deep concern for the family. Wendall also looked after Bob Manovill's Quarter Horse mare, Moira, and her first foal. Bob lived for that mare and concerned that the foaling might be near or was delayed, had Wendall examine her. All was well but as the one designated to "hold her head down" with my knee, at the indignity of the examination, I was sent flying with a lift of the mare's neck in one direction and my Aussie hat in another . . . which the mare promptly filled with a steaming deposit. Marion has an exquisite touch for making a beautiful house and extending hospitality. I remember the gorgeous prints on their walls and nice drapes which I recall she made. Friends like Wendall and Marion add value to life.

My Dad, Wendell's older brother, took over farming the Grasse family farm in Douglas, NB, and so Wendell lived with us while at college doing his veterinary studies. What I most remember about my Uncle Wendell, aside from his love of animals and especially horses, was he was fun - he always had a smile, a laugh, a joke, and he told great stories, often amusing ones! He was my favourite Uncle.

Thanks to Wendell over time, I acquired three Quarter horses beginning with young gelding from King Ranch via Dundas Farms. Bred to work cattle he had earned the title ‘Cold-back’… Skipping to the point: Perro was a quick study for most every thing but ‘cowboys’. Thank you for pointing me in that direction, Wendell Grasse!
And the memories at Penny Lane will NEVER to beaten!
PEI’s equine world was always better for your being there good sir.
Peace to your brilliant soul and to hearts of all family and friends.

Marion, Holly, Kip, Jason, Aaron and families...I am so very sorry to learn of Wendells passing. I can't begin to tell you how much of an impact Wendell had on my life as an equestrian, from the days of boarding in the barn to my laters years working with him when he was Chair Island Horse Council and I was on the Coach Committee. I will never forget his humble, calm and wise words and ways, and what he tolerated in his barn with us rousy boarders and horses. I will also never stop appreciating all that he did. My most sincere condolences to all of you at this sad time.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Wendell for his finale two months as his cargiver. He was a most pleasant gentleman, and I looked forward to each day with him. His family welcomed me every moment and I am most greatful for the entire experience. This pic was only days before Wendell left us, as we enjoyed some ball hockey in the barn loft. All my condolences to Wendells' entire family and friends. RIP my "final mile" friend, Dillon.

Wendell was a one of the "Good Guys". He had such a wonderful demeanor and positive attitude towards life. I can only ever remember him with a big smile on his face, so genuine a character you would feel warm when you were around him.
He so loved his family and would literally light up the moment he started speaking about them. Wendell had such a wondeful family life.
He will be dearly missed by all that were lucky enough to have known him.

I am very saddened to learn of Wendell's death and I want to convey my sincerest condolences to Marion and to all members of his family. A good man has died and will be sorely missed. I always thought very highly of Dr. Grasse while we were both at the AVC. As an administrator, he was forthright, honest, and always reasonable in providing his considered opinions. As a man, Wendell had this perpetual smile on his face, and it was one born of mirth and amusement, certainly not of cynicism. Others have commented on that wonderful twinkle in his eye. He was a man... yes he was, and he'll be missed. [In his memory, I include a photo of a member of the horse family he so loved.]

My sincere sympathy to Marion and family for their loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Wendell was a favorite of many people. Over the years we shared many laughs and pranks which he dearly loved to play. He was always available for any equine advice we needed and always up for a visit at Penny Lane.
I was fortunate to have a visit with him a month or so before he passed and could still see that little glint in his eye when we teased him a bit!
He will be very missed by all his family and friends.

My parents thought so highly of him. He was a great friend to both of them
He was so kind to my brothers and I while we bordered our horses at Penny lane. We all thought he was wonderful.
