My condolences to Gloria's entire family. She was an incredible person, a great teacher, athlete and coach. She taught all of my kids at Belfast, and they all adored her. Gloria has had a long battle, but her struggle is over. I know her tremendous faith would have given her courage and comfort. May we all take similarly from memories of her and the beautiful life she lived.

God help me write this. I have tried to put into words how I feel about Gloria but words don’t come close to how I feel. We started to play hockey on the same team years ago. I was the elder by far but she was my teacher. We played a long time on the same team. She started as a youth and we played together long after she had her Tara, Kate and John. Alway led by example and what a wonderful example she was. I thank God that she came into my life.Fly high with the Angels Gloria. My condolences to Donnie and all the family.

So saddened to hear about Gloria's passing. I worked with her at West Royalty Elementary School and reconnected in the West Royalty retirement group, once she retired last year. She has always been an inspiration and an amazement She never complained or appeared cranky although, unlike me, I know she had reason to feel tired and worn. Her energy and enthusiasm never waned. Her concern for her students and her colleagues was genuine and she never sought out praise or attention for the incredible work she did at the school. I know she will be missed by so many, friends, colleagues and students alike. My deepest condolences to her husband and her children. You were her life.

Sending love and condolences to Gloria herself, Donnie, Tara, John and Kate on her passing. Her dearly loved mother and father, hee brothers and their families were also so dear to her. She is deeply mourned by her many friends.
I first met Gloria playing against her in many sports, she at Vernon River, me at Belfast. She was a leader and a master at everything she tried - soccer, volleyball, basketball and track and field. And with warm and genuine sportsmanship. Not many kids made friends with opposing teams in junior high, but Gloria did.
In high school, we finally became teammates and closer friends. Gloria loved to push herself to improve and also to relax and enjoy stories and a good laugh. We travelled the Island in those high school vans - laughing the whole time, it felt like. She was just pure fun.
We shared apartments in our 20’s in Charlottetown, which was a series of more fun, more sport and more adventure. She invited me to play in adult soccer and volleyball leagues where she continued to shine as an athlete and friend. By this time, she was also teaching at Belfast and was always excited to tell me how my niece and nephew, Janna and Jacob Simmons were progressing through their days and years. To them, Miss Whelan had rock star status - the best of all time!! Sport was her passion and teaching was her joy. At Belfast, she also met her dear friend Charlene Zakem who was a rock to her ever more.
I moved away from the Island just when she met her dear Donnie and started her beloved family. I remember visiting when the twins were newborn and recall the sense of peace and joy she had found with them. She clearly loved them with her whole heart. Which still had room for their dear Kate who arrived soon after.
Her illness was such a struggle for so many years. We all learned from her courage and patience, while wishing and praying it away. I am so very sorry for her passing and wish you all peace and warm memories of her smile, care and laughter. Thinking of you all.

I have numerous memories of Gloria from our Vernon River days. Swimming at O'Keef's Lake, hide & seek in the corn field, and rowdy sleep overs with all the VR Crew (Mary Jean, Debra, Megan, etc). Gloria could turn any afternoon school skate at Pownal rink into who was the fastest? Gloria always won, the boys could never catch her.
Gloria had a beautiful soul and was an amazing mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend. I always felt so lucky when we would run into each other and have a quick chat. Thinking of you all.

Words cannot express what I want to convey to all of Gloria's family and friends. I recall meeting Gloria on my first day at Vernon River when she sat beside me and smiled. She always had a smile. We played on many school teams together during our years in Vernon River and Montague, and she was a wonderful teammate and a fierce competitor. Her generous spirit, quick wit, and intelligence always shone through on and off the court.
I have not lived in PEI since high school; we lost touch over the years. But, on a visit a few years ago while at mass, when Gloria saw me, she immediately ran over and hugged me. Of course she did; always reaching out with kindness. We had a nice catch-up, and it was like old times. She clearly was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, teammate and friend; a true gem.
I am thinking of the Whalen and Campbell families during this incredibly difficult time, and I send condolences and much love to you all.

I was saddened to hear of Gloria's passing this week after her courageous battle over the last few years. I was fortunate to get to know Gloria when we worked together at West Royalty Elementary. As our Physical Education Teacher, she was able to continue the strong tradition of the program and established an atmosphere where students felt safe and appreciated. Fair Play, Equal Opportunity and Healthy Living were the hallmarks of her teaching. She was a valued colleague and a leader with the staff. She will be missed by all of us who came to know and appreciate her wonderful qualities. My sincere sympathy to Donnie, Tara, John, Kate, Gloria's extended family, friends and co-workers. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
