Obituary of Leonard Hookey
Peacefully and surrounded by his family at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Monday, June 20, 2022, the death occurred of Leonard Hookey of Stratford, age 85 years.
Born in St. John’s, NFLD. He was the son of the late Joshua Hookey and Sarah Blundell.
The guiding forces for him were family, people and giving back to his community. Spring, Summer and Holiday family get togethers were a must, filled with lots of laughs and fond memories. Len loved to meet, learn, entertain, and share his sharp wit with all (He talked to everyone!). He developed a great number of longtime friendships throughout the years as a member / volunteer of Minor Hockey, Village of Bunbury Council, Kinsmen, K-40, Belvedere Golf Club, Charlottetown Club, Meals on Wheels and he absolutely loved starting his days with The Gang @ The Inn on The Hill. Other great passions included his “Blue & White” hockey & baseball teams, The Packers, The Markets, golf, playing cards, billiards and of course Horse Racing. He loved PEI Horse Racing and consistently followed Island Drivers Up Country and in the USA. His successful careers at The Royal Bank (Newcastle, Sackville, Stephenville, Charlottetown) and The Cooperators lead to many personal longtime relationships but none more important to him, than one night in Sackville, where he met The Love of His Life …Anna.
Anna and Len shared a lasting Love for family, socializing with friends, golfing, and spending winter months in Daytona Beach, but none greater than their Love for each other. This was evident as Len cared for Anna during the last years of her declining health.
Len is well known for his outgoing Newfoundland personality which comes from growing up in St. John’s and spending summers in Hickman’s Harbour fishing and being mischievous. He credits his sister Marion for helping him to navigate the straights & narrows at a young age.
Beloved husband of over 60 years to the late Anna Hookey (Terrio). Loving father of sons Michael Hookey (Kelly) Steven Hookey (Penny), daughter Margot Toner (Ivan). Len will be missed by his grandchildren; Taylor Hookey, Jordan Hookey, Joshua Hookey, Melanie Toner, Adam Toner, Anna Hookey, Meghan Hookey and Jack Hookey, his sister, Marion Noseworthy, brothers-in-law; Jim Terrio (Sherma), Ralph Terrio, and Richard Terrio (Lynn) and many nieces and nephews Besides his parents, he is deceased by brothers-in-law; Walt Noseworthy, Danny Terrio and his wife, Carol and sister-in-law Pierette Terrio.
The family wish to thank; Nancy & Norman Ramsay, Ozzie MacKinnon, Doreen & Peter Knox, Kim & Tom Geikie, staff at Andrews of Park West, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Dr. Kris Saunders for the love and care given to Len.
Interred in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Hillsboro Funeral Home, Stratford at a later date.
