Richard was a gentleman! I am truly thankful for having known Richard and Marion for most of my life. What started out as friends of my parents, turned into a friendship that has been an inspiration and encouragement to me throughout my life. I will remember Richard’s optimism and desire to positively impact others…often when faced with seemingly insurmountable circumstances.
My father told me once, “Richard is the toughest man I know!” Rest In Peace Richard!
“Death is swallowed up in victory!”

I had the pleasure of knowing Richard during my time at the Legislative Assembly where he so diligently tended to Hansard. Looking back, I cannot recall any serious issues with Hansard, despite the fact that Ministers, MLA's and Premiers (inluding myself), were not always easy to follow when speaking to the Assembly. This speaks to Richard's attention to detail and getting things right. He was often the first person one would see upon entry to the Chamber, and his friendly greetings and his general disposition helped create a positive atmosphere which was appreciated by both Government and the Opposition as well as by staff. He made our Province a better place. Thank you, Richard.

Richard Montigny was a prince of a man. He served the community with honesty and dedication. He was even tempered and despite his disability worked hard to contribute to PEI. He was a man of dignity with an old fashioned sense of right and wrong. I heard he was ailing and that made me sad. His passing makes me greatly sad but in remembering Richard I take courage to press on despite setbacks. God rest his soul.

Marion, Deneige and Mani and Family,
Roger and I had the pleasure of working with Richard for years through our involvement with Gateway Auctions out of Borden-Carleton. Richard was the cashier for Ralph MacDonald and Everett Campbell and was absolutely meticulous! When Richard did up your bill at the end of an auction, you never had to worry if it was correct, as it was ALWAYS correct. Richard had the funniest sense of humor and loved a good joke. He was always kind and patient and cheerful and would always brighten our day. Roger and I travelled to many an auction sale to the middle of nowhere (at least that's where I felt it was at) with Richard over the years and really got to know him well. The three of us had amazing, enlightening and transformative conversations on numerous subjects...Richard was so well versed in so many things, it always amazed me at the vast array of knowledge in his head. Richard was instrumental in getting our dear friend, the late Leigh Nicholson, his apartment on Dorchester street in Charlottetown. Richard was chair of the Board of Directors of the not-for-profit that operated the building that had accessible ground floor units, which Leigh required at that time, which was early 2000's. Leigh and Richard became good friends and Leigh never forgot the things Richard did for him, nor did we. It was deeply appreciated. During that time, Richard became a Hansard recorder at the PEI Legislature, was chair of the not for profit Board that operated several apartment buildings in Charlottetown, was the chair of the Canadian Paraplegic Association, PEI division, worked at auction sales as the cashier for Gateway Auctions, was a Board Member of Pat and the Elephant, and Easter Seals, PEI Special Olympics (I believe), the PEI Council of People with Disabilities, formerly the PEI Council of the Disabled, and several others I have forgotten the name of. I never met anyone who worked as hard as Richard did...especially someone who had a multitude of disabilities. He never let any of it get him down, or slow him down. His greatest joy in life, though, besides his lovely wife, Marion, was when he and Marion adopted Deneige. Becoming a father completed something in Richard and it radiated into everything he did. He was truly one of a kind and an inspiration for all of us.
A couple of years ago, while chatting with a cousin of Roger's, Heather Stewart, Heather said that a dear childhood friend of hers told her to say hello to the two of us. When Heather told us it was Richard Montigny, we almost fell off the chair. We shared some wonderful stories with Heather and she shared some with us we hadn't heard before. Richard made friends everywhere he went, many of them life long friendships. He had the absolutely biggest heart of anyone I knew.
Rest in Peace, dear friend. You will never be forgotten.
Deepest condolences to Marion, Deneige and Mani and the rest of Richard's family and friends. We will carry a piece of Richard with us forever. May God grace you all with peace, love and light.

Richard was instrumental in hiring four young adults, of which I was one, to run a summer kid's activity camp in Cornwall at Eliot River School in the morning, and create a walking trail in the afternoon at, what is now, Hyde Park. I believe it was the summer of 1980...over four decades ago! Richard's office was located in the Cornwall Curling Club and he always presented himself in a very professional manner, whether it was during the interview process or when we collected our cheque. His skill set and knowledge was a welcoming addition to a village that was growing. Kudos to Richard for his dedication and hard work!
Condolences to Richard's family

Richard was a very outstanding gentleman within his Community by helping people with their rights. I was always interested in what he was doing to make things better for the disabled on the island.
When I planned a wedding for a friend of mine I got him to do the wedding ceremony and he was great.
Richard will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
