Obituary of William Joseph Aylward
Surrounded by family on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Beach Grove Home, William (Bill) Joseph Aylward in his 90th year passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (McCaughey) Aylward, his beloved and supportive children, Ann (Ian) Vessey, Susan (Frank) Tierney and James (Cecelia) Aylward and his sister Theresa MacGillivary of New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews. Proud Grandfather to Kathleen (Colm) Doherty, James Vessey, Keigan & Keara Tierney and Connor Aylward; adoring Great Grandfather of Cillian Doherty. Also survived by in laws Joe (MaryLou) McCaughey, Charlie McCaughey (Anne), Vernon (Hildegard) McCaughey, John (Helen deceased) McCaughey, Carlotta (Jack) Kelly and Mary McCaughey (Wayne).
Bill was predeceased by his parents James and Mary (O’Brien) Aylward, siblings Mary & Amby Smith, John & Tillie Aylward, Margaret & Joe Dowling, Josephine & Joe Robinson.
Born in Green Meadows and raised on the family farm, Bill left at an early age and at 17 began his successful 42 year career with Marine Atlantic. He and Elizabeth set roots in Sherwood where they raised their family. Bill was very active in his community through his volunteer work with the Knights of Columbus, St Pius X Parish, Sherwood/Parkdale Hockey Association and was an avid card player. He also volunteered with many charitable organizations. Bill & Liz enjoyed sharing good times with family & friends at the family cottage in DeSable. He was well known for his culinary abilities and hospitality.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 2–4 and 7-9 with The Knights of Columbus prayer service to be held at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 10:00 a.m.at St Pius X Church. Interment will take place at a later date in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown.
If so desired memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
